- How can I fix a stem leak on a Superior ball valve?
The Superior ball valves seal with a packing instead of O-rings. First, try slightly torqueing the pack nut around the stem to see if this stops the leak. If not, we offer WA/WAS cap kits to replace the packing.
- Will ball valves work as atmospheric isolation valves?
No. Refrigeration ball valves are permitted to leak internally, per industry standard, up to 10 ounces of refrigerant per year are allowed to leak past internal seals. This is a very important consideration when assembling a multi split system. External leaks cannot exceed .10 ounces of refrigerant per year.
- Can refrigerant leak past a check valve?
Yes, check valves do not isolate in the closed position and it is permissible for refrigerant to leak past. Although, if orientated vertically, and there were a large water column above the exit of the valve, the weight of the water can hinder the performance.
- Can magnetic check valves be used in the hot gas line?
Yes, as long as the temperature is below the maximum of 300°F.
- Are magnetic check valves serviceable?
No, magnetic check valves cannot be serviced.
- Can magnetic check valves be used in any orientation?
Yes, the magnet allows this type of check valve to be used in any orientation. Although, if orientated vertically, and there were a large water column above the exit of the valve, the weight of the water can hinder the performance.
- What pressure settings are available for Superior relief valves?
Superior relief valves are only available at specific pressure settings. Custom pressure settings are not available. Please refer to the catalog for details.
- Will a Superior relief valve work with R744 (CO2)?
Yes, Superior relief valves will work with R744.
- What are some tips for installing uniform shells?
The shell may be installed in any direction as long as the flow direction is correct. Horizontal installation is usually preferred because any trash trapped by the core will not fall into the outlet when the core is removed.
When installing, make sure there is enough room available to be able to remove the baseplate and change the filter in the future.
Remove all internal components before brazing.
- When should I change a filter drier?
A liquid line filter drier typically needs to be replaced when the system is opened to atmosphere.
Filter driers should be cut out of a system instead of un-soldered because the heat will release moisture form the drier being removed.
Suction line filter driers should not be replaced until the system is known to be clean and no longer has acids in the system after a compressor burnout.
Suction line filter driers with excessive pressure drop should be removed from a system. This is because an excessive pressure drop will reduce system capacity.
A good rule of thumb to determine if a filter drier needs replacement is if there is a 2 °F or 2 psig pressure drop across the filter drier.
If a filter drier is added to the liquid line of a system that previously did not have a filter drier, add additional refrigerant to the unit to fill the interior space of the drier. No charge is necessary if a drier is added to the suction line.
When servicing in the field, it is advisable to replace the original filter drier with one of the original size or the next larger size.
- How do I install the suction line core in a Uni-Form Shell?
Superior cores are stored in a sealed bag protecting them from contaminates and moisture. Do not open the bag until you are ready to install the core. Please read the “Caution” statement on the box carefully before installing the core.
